On 6 June 2017, CNN reported that teachers and students from Hainan Normal University have successfully rescued 55 sea turtles. In 2014, Hainan Normal University set up a voluntary team to rescue sea turtles - the sea turtle rescue station, which is known as the ‘Sea Turtle Hospital’. The ‘Turtle Hospital’ allows sick or injured turtles to receive treatment and return to the ocean in good health. Since its establishment, under the guidance of experts, the young volunteers of the Sea Turtle Rescue Station have successfully saved 55 sea turtles. The first turtle admitted after the establishment of the Turtle Rescue Station was sent over by the Wenchang authorities. The border guards had seized a turtle that was being sold privately by fishermen. When the turtle was sent to the turtle rescue station, it was already suffering from dehydration because it had been on the deck for too long. The volunteers then urgently gave it fluids to replenish its strength. At the same time, they searched for seawater to build a ‘hospital bed’ for the turtle. Professor Shi Haitao, Deputy President of Hainan Normal University and well-known ‘Dr. Turtle’ of Hainan Normal University, who has long been concerned about the situation of sea turtles in Hainan Province, has been worried about this. At present, teachers and students of Hainan Normal University rescue and research on turtles, Sacalia quadriocellata, Trachemys scripta elegans and other turtles besides the rescue of sea turtles.
