China Civilization Network: “Turtles’ Way to Home” Marine Conservation Volunteer Service Project

On 4 December 2018, China Civilisation Network reported on the ‘Turtles’ Way to Home’ Marine Conservation Volunteer Service Project at the School of Life Sciences of Hainan Normal University. The project was launched on 6 June 2013, with 826 registered volunteers participating in the project, and the project leader is Yu Peihai, a student of the School of Life Sciences of Hainan Normal University. The project takes advantage of its professional strengths to carry out sea turtle rescue and protection work to save endangered animals; organises various forms of sea turtle protection publicity activities to popularise knowledge about sea turtles and marine protection, and raise public attention to sea turtles and marine protection; increases cooperation with various departments to promote the participation of multiple forces in sea turtle protection and publicity, and fights against the illegal hunting of and trade in sea turtles. With the joint efforts of teachers and students from the School of Life Sciences of Hainan Normal University, the volunteer service has achieved good results. The project has invested a total of about 350,000 yuan in funding, more than 800 volunteers have accumulated more than 10,400 hours of service, 36 core volunteers have been trained, a total of 69 sea turtles have been rescued, assistance has been provided in identifying 452 hawksbill turtles, 112 green turtles, and the other 392 pieces of sea turtle products such as bracelets and necklaces. In addition, the project has attracted extensive attention from domestic and international media and the joint participation of celebrities and dignitaries; at the same time, the project has enhanced people's awareness of protecting sea turtles through multi-channel publicity and the joint efforts of many parties to protect sea turtles.
