Report Date: 2021-03-24
On 24 March 2021, the South China Sea Network reported on how the turtle ‘Snow White’ was rescued twice by the Hainan Normal University's Sea Turtle Rescue Station. Associate Professor Lin Liu recalled that it was the first endoscopic surgery on a sea turtle in Hainan Province. The surgery was a success, and because of the albino body of the rescued turtle, the students at the University's turtle rescue station gave it a unique name, ‘Snow White’. ‘Snow White’ the turtle was taken to Wenchang after 2 years of rehabilitation at the Hainan Normal University Turtle Rescue Station after surgery, and then released. But the "Snow White" was caught by fishermen after only half a month in the ocean freely. After the second rescue of the ‘Snow White’, it recuperated in the rescue station for 7-8 months, during which it excreted a large number of plastic fragments. Lin Liu analysed it as a result of an intestinal blockage caused by accidentally eating a plastic bag in the ocean. ‘Until it no longer excrete plastic, its intestinal function returned to normal, we released it back to the sea in Wenchang.’ Talking about the blessing to ‘Snow White’, Lin Liu said ‘I hope to never see it again.’ At present, in Hainan Normal University turtle rescue station, there are still more than ten sea turtles receiving rescue and treatment. It is known that the rescue station will carry out the turtle wildlife training this year, if the wildlife training results are good, the station will choose the right time to send them back to the sea.
