Report Date: 2021-01-30

On 29 January 2021, Professor Shi Haitao of the Key Laboratory of Tropical Island Ecology of the Ministry of Education, Hainan Normal University, published the article ‘China's Turtles Need Protection in the Wild’ as a letter in the main issue of Science, a top international journal. This is the first time for our university to publish a paper in Science. Professor Shi's group has been researching and focusing on the protection of marine ecology.

There are many problems in protecting endangered species through artificial aquaculture, and studies have proved that aquaculture is harmful to conservation. Therefore, the protection of wild populations is particularly important. Prof Shi has been working on wildlife ecology and conservation for more than 30 years, and has not only led field studies on turtle ecology in the Diaoluo Mountains, but has also been working on environmental education for local students of the Li and Miao ethnic group in Hainan. In addition, he has also conducted wildlife training for law enforcement officers from various departments to enhance the awareness of wildlife protection among all people and to help build an ecological civilisation in Hainan.
