The base is located in South Kunshan Mountain Nature Reserve, Longmen County, Huizhou City, Guangdong Province, which belongs to the southern subtropical monsoon climate, inhabited by a variety of China's native and endangered chelonians, including Sacalia bealei, Geoemyda spengleri and Platysternon. The reserve has a healthy pristine habitat and ideal wildlife protection, making it very suitable for field studies of chelonians.
In 2021, Hainan Normal University (HNU) and South Kunshan Mountain Reserve (SKMR) collaborated to establish the South Kunshan Mountain Field Research Base to conduct field research on native chelonians. The base is equipped with enclosures, video surveillance and recording systems, and motorbikes for travelling. It can carry out field research on a variety of chelonians, and is currently carrying out research on population monitoring, field ecology, evolutionary adaptations, and genetic diversity of Geoemyda spengleri.
