The base is located in the Diaoluoshan Nature Reserve in Hainan Province. The reserve is one of the more concentrated areas of tropical rainforest preservation in China, with an existing forest area of 62,600,000ha and a forest coverage rate of 88.5 per cent. There are more than 2,100 species of plants and 337 species of vertebrates recorded in the forest area, of which 89 species of plants and animals are listed in the national Ⅰ and Ⅱ level of protected flora and fauna. There are more than 250 species of endemic plants and animals in Hainan, which makes the reserve an extremely ideal base for ecological research.

In 2006, by the joint efforts of Hainan Normal University and Diaoluoshan Mountain Nature Reserve, Hainan Tropical Wildlife Ecology Provincial Key Laboratory Diaoluoshan Mountain field research base and Hainan Normal University, Diaoluoshan Mountain animal and plant teaching internship base was formally established. At present, the base has a land area of about 300 m2, with complete water, electricity, transport and other infrastructure. Relying on the base, more than 20 scientific research projects have been approved in recent years, more than 70 academic papers have been published, and two monographs have been published; The team has won the Second Prize of Provincial Teaching Achievements of Hainan Province and the First Prize of Teaching Achievements of Hainan Normal University; and we cultivated more than 2,000 undergraduates, more than 20 masters, doctors, and post-doctoral talents; and provided technical services for the government and enterprises and got more than 3.2 million RMB of financial support. It has made significant contributions to the conservation and management of wildlife diversity in Hainan.

In 2023, the Diaoluoshan Mountain Vertebrate Diversity Field Observatory in Hainan Province, led by Professor Wang Jichao, has become one of the first provincial field scientific observatories.
